Those prices sound really high. I had a 5 ton Carrier complete unit with compressor and air handler with gas heat for $3500,2 years ago. He was a friend but he made money on the deal

Being a '71 model that's what I'm afraid of. Replace the ac this year and replace the heater next year.
    .

Then you have all the extra labor cost to remove and install the heating unit. If it's very bad lots of these guys won't touch the deal without replacing both. Don't want the liability of something going wrong.

You are in correct sir. At that price a legitimate company can not even break even after paying labor or overhead. Your friend did you a favor and helped you out for sure.

Try your best to replace both at the same time so your not paying double labor. Even if you finance it you will save a lot off your power bill toward the payment. Usually 30-50 percent of actual cooling bill with 15 seer.

Units range from 14 seer to 20 plus seer. Buy a 15 seer with variable speed fan motor in your furnace if you can afford it. The variable speed motor can take out 2-3 times more moisture out of your house making it more comfy in our humid climate.

That's seems a little high. Usually a 1200 sq ft house needs a 2.5 to 3 ton unit. Our price for an American standard 14 seer with a 5 yr labor 10 year parts warranty would be 5200-5500.

Walker in Oxford is who I use.
i think you may be dreaming that that is too high for two quality units.

My price was for 1. Only upstairs unit. Downstairs is fine. Your gonna pay in this area anywhere from 3-5k for one. Depending on size and seer

I know I was a good deal but he has been in the business for 30 years and has all the above mentioned expenses. He is not a huge company with his son and 4 employees. We are not close enough for him to lose money on the deal. I did pay him in cash.

Cash reduces the deal by 4%.
