Right after the spawn when the fish move back out to the main lake.

Trolling minnows and jigs never stops tho. Just use a bigger weight and go faster in a few weeks or so.

should I just look for open flats? do they stage out in flats suspended during summertime....or do you still need to focus on cover

Not necessarily. Just cover water. Sometimes the better fish will be on the North side and the next day on the South side or maybe the on flats or hanging on the sides of the channel. The best thing about pulling at 1.7mph is that it doesn't take long to cover a lot water and run them down and start gong back an forth if need be. If I find them on a certain contour line, I can run it 8 to 10 miles an never turnaround.

Pay attention to your graph while you are doing this, you will learn a LOT about the lake and ad it to the memory banks to use other times of the year. I have learned more about the lakes I fish by doing this.

You can also get em on 12 to 16 ft. flats out from spawning areas staging up to go in.
