Big H have you even considered the new 2014 Dodge 1500 with the Eco diesel? It's gets supposively 28 mpg which isn't too bad for a truck,,,

Recently read a report in Car and Driver about that truck. They hung a ski boat behind it and pulled it around. Did not get the mileage or have near the power it is supposed to have. And for the added cost you could buy a lot of gasoline for one with more power in a 1/2 ton.

I noticed that yesterday pulling my rig with wife's cousin's truck not the diesel but a half ton 4 door 4 wheel drive and when it shifted through it was trying to pull at 1200 rpms and 60 mph, couldn't stay there, too high geared and the gas guesser thingy said we were cruising at 60 getting a whopping 11 miles to the gallon. Now I know the diesel should do better but gear ratio is a big factor in diesels, I aint buying it as far as their pitch.
