Here in Illinois buck decoys are sometimes the final death punch for a big ol bruiser. We place one in open fields like corn or bean fields right on field edges where bucks come to check for does in heat and usually only about 15-30yds from our tree stand (were using archery) if A buck comes out that thinks it's dominate it will often times come and confrot the decoy and put on a pretty good show doing it.
