    Default Question about home repairs

Since y'all are all the time showing pics of work y'all are doing to your houses I have decided to try and redo a bathroom in our house. I was given a house that is an older house with lots of repairs to be done. I am fixing to try and do the bathroom myself but I have a question for y'all. I have enough tile left over from a floor to tile up around a shower but the people living here before just used a shower that only half way up had some kind of water proof board and the top half of the dry wall is peeling a little. What kind of board do I need to buy to hang over this wall before I lay my tile? Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1373234521.121007.jpg

Water proof sheet rock. It is blue instead of the usual white. Just googled after I posted. Google says wonderboard is better than the sheetrock for tile. Also said the waterproof sheetrock was green. I suppose google can be wrong from time to time Good luck with the project.

When laying tile on a surface other than concrete, you use a cement backer board.

Would that be okay to just board up over the dry wall or would I need to rear it out?

The stuff on the lower part of the wall is and old material called Marlite. Tear it off then plumb or shim up the wall where you tear it out if it has to be shimmed. Then as Feelay stated always put up a some type of concrete backer. Hardy makes a thinner concrete backer that is easy to handle and works well in this application. Then put a waterproofer on it. They make one that is in a gallon bucket and you just roll it over the backer like paint. It is a little pricey but I would never do a shower wall or floor without it. When it dries it is just like a solid sheet of rubber. Take a brush and really poke it in all your seams real good. May be a little work to this but if you take these steps you will enjoy your ceramic shower a wholeee lot longer. Just my opinion.

Gdg have you ever used something I saw in lowes that was tile board. It was different patterns of tile like on a drywall board. It came in 4x 8 sheets and was supposedly water proof if you glued it up there. Might go that route if you think it's good stuff

I have never personally used it but I have looked at it. I would not go with anything under 3/8 of an inch thick. The hardy backer is really good stuff for putting on walls. Just be sure that if you cut it or any other type of crete board with a power saw to be sure and wear a mask man, the dust that you will generate is not a good thing to inhale.

Ok I don't know anybody that has used that tile board either but if it would have worked I was just thinking it would have been easier to just glue up and be done
