High end Nikon is just fine for the gun but if you go with the 50mm lens then your scope is sitting very high on that encore and you wont get a good fit with your cheekbone on the stock and it will kick the crap out of you and probably tatoo you between the eyes. I would recommend a 3-9 x 42 and get as low to the barrel as you can. I bought some one piece rings & mounts for mine from Mid-South shooters supply that work great. Ive been shooting Encores for a while and this is what works best for me, give me a shout if I can help you out Tommy.

Major, this is just my opinion so all you Nikon guys dont blast me. I can tell you from experience that Leupold is the only way to go. Ive had nikons and they are good scopes without a doubt, until you have trouble with one and try to get company service out it. Had one that was less than 3 months old and crosshairs messed up in it and gas leaker or something and it just went to pot. Never got the place I bought it to get them to do anything about it. Nowwww I have a buddy that dropped his rifle in the water and ruined his Leupold. Cracked the lense and actually told them how it happened and they replaced it with a brand new one no questions at allll! Now that the kind of service I like. When you buy a Leupold you bought it for life they guarantee it no questions asked plain and simple. JMO

My advice Maj since I am not a big gun guy is you need one wit rubber bumperRofl. Like Slab said, I put a 50 mm scope on my 17 and had to put muzzle loader mounts on it to get it mounted right. It is way up there.

Maj, I got a flyer from Bass Pro or Cabellas yesterday stating they take trade ins of old scopes towards the purchase of a new one. Ifn you gonna buy one anyhow, take an old one with ya and get the discount. Didn't say it had to be a good scope or even working for that matter. I'll look when I get home and see who had this offer.

I got that flyer too minner. Went to BPS yesterday, stood there at the scope counter where two guys (employees) were fooling with a stock piece and talking away and never got waited on. BPS is going to lose some of my business to Van's for sure. It's a much longer drive for me but you can always get good, knowledgeable help at Vans.

Cant beat a nikon, got 3 prostaffs on my muzzleloader 06 and 45-70 and never had a problem, not even when the rope broke and my 06 fell 20ft to the ground
