I own my own business now. I have since 1996. It is a small operation but I make a comfortable living!!! The local here has approached me several times about joining. I just could not see any benefit in joining. Their scale is about half of what I make now. I supply my own retirement and health insurance which I got a pretty good deal on.
Not saying they are bad. They're just not for me. I pick and choose my jobs and don't travel out of town. The local here wanted me to drive to locations 2-3 hours away or further. Like I said, it's just not for me!!!!

I got a young man that may be a perfect candidate for a union.
Had a job out of town, gonna be gone 2 nights, I was going to pay for transportation, all meals, hotel room (have to split a room with another guy tho), all his drinks while gone (no alcohol), and pay him 10 bucks CASH an hour. He was worth more than that he thought so I tolt him to keep his arse at home and not to call me again.banghead Everything the little turd knew I taught him, he'll fit rite in.

Gator, gettin back to the original topic, the union does provide some of the best safety trainin out there and for the majority of the time their job sites are the cleanest. But, the big concerns for insurance companies is, being able to terminate a union employee for safety violations. Some companies do not have hire/fire authority and this makes it difficult to insure a company where there is no recourse for safety violations.

I used to work 6 months to a year 7days a week and 12 hour shifts straight shut down work, we never needed no union cause we would work and not have to worry about our jobs, the refinery's and plants would call us in to fix what was broke down while there guys would talk on the cell phone and tear up stuff.looks like the only good thing about the union is that they supply you with a cell phone and time to use it just my opinion and experiences

That's what the wife is for.... She's finishing school next month and will make good money... And she's only 33 years old... She got a ways to go before she retires...
