Yeah, we had a store close by where you had to buy gas by the gallons. The pump had a crank and would run the gas up into a glass container on top of the pump. The container was marked with lines for each gallon then once the gas was there a hose run from the container down and that was when you put the gas in the car. I remember when they changed pumps it was confusing because you had to say how much money of gas you wanted. The old pump you would ask for 5 gallons which was a dollar or less and the new pump the big numbers were the amount of money you was spending, so you would look for a 5 to roll up and your tank would over fill... you just pumped 25 gallons!! and spent a months gas money of $5.
This was in the 60's in small town south USA where big changes took forever to happen. Doesn't seem that long ago to me.
