I would imagine that, other than keeping the boat secure in a moderate maneuever or fender bender, having the boat bow hooked only is your best bet not to catch a Terrova in the back of the head in the event of a severe head on collision. That said, I agree it's a bad idea for metal boats for sure and probably not real good for your transom and lower units on bigger glass boats. Chances are that even if the boat rear came around and was diverted from climbing the cab, the real danger is in the front end collision in the first place. I'd also imagine than in a "real" wreck, most of our straps, buckles or eye bolts would give way rather than hold the boat. Most, like mine, have some age and sun damage anyway. On top of that, I think my bow strap is rated at either 3 or 5K pounds, can't remember, but a 2K boat pulling 8 Gs in an accident is gonna exceed that substantially.
Most accidents I've seen with a boat of any size in tow what normally happens in the boat stays with the trailer just long enough to come around and jack knife the truck and frequently the boat comes loose after that collision.
Not sure what the answer for the greatest measure of safety is, but for me, I'm sticking with strapped on both ends with good tension plus the safety chain and try to keep my distance from the car in front with a reasonable speed.
