I don't have my puck permanently mounted but I do always try to keep it close to the ducer. You will get much more accurate waypoints if you are marking things under the boat that way. I can move mine around so when I'm fishing off the front of the boat I move it up there and then my puck is giving me my position right over the top of the stuff I marked, make sense?

If you go to get the Navionics chip for it, it will only work with the HotMaps Regular, the Premium and Platinum will not work in it. I found out the hard way. Great little unit and it will serve you well.
