I guess I am gonna have to get someone with a color unit to take me out so I can see. I just don't see the extra 150-250 bucks for color over grey it's the same unit right?
oleblue, the units I have are X37tx and X67c, both by Lowrance. I looked on ebay and found one 37tx, not working for $129.99, and several of the 67c from $240.00 - $312.00. Do some research and see what you think, I never used them at all, put my HBs on the boat as soon as I got it. If you want these, you can have them both for $200.00 including transducers, wires, etc. I've also got a real good Motor Guide Pro 46 for sale.
102% sure you can not link the units. The extra 2% is so you can average it with the 2 guys that were 99% sure.
The fish Elite is excelent. I had a Fish Mark 480, which is the same unit as the Elite without the GPS and the fish finder function was very, very, very good. If I had another boat at the moment, I'd still have the Fish Mark on it. As far as black and white go, it's about as good as you can get at present. The only thing better would be either a Lowrance X135 or X96...can't remember which, but one or the other will have slightly higher output in wattage, but the Elite is plenty for how we fish.
Now, color vs black and white. Other than ease of viewing, the difference will be that with color, you have varying colors to represent signal return. For example a big fish will reflect in red, yellow and blue depending on how strong the signal gets reflected. The black and white does the same thing, but in varying shades of gray so it's not as easy to distinquish. Say you run over a top with fish in and around it, with a color unit, you have a better chance of picking out the fish from the top than with grayscale since all returns will look about the same. Now, that said, if you fish like me, if you run over a top, you're going to fish it anyway whether the FF says there are fish there or not, so having color or not would make no differnce to me as long as I knew there was a top there to fish in the first place.
So...yes, it's a good unit, yes it's a good value at $209, yes, I'd buy one if that's what I could afford and yes, I'd rather have color.
Oh, and Yes, it is made by Lowrance.

For mapcards, you're only choice should be Navionics HotMaps or Navionics Hot Maps Premium both in South Edition. Don't think the Platinum will run in the Elites.
Don't know the specs on the X37 of Maj's, but the X67c is a color unit with built in GPS only a smaller diaginal screen. Not sure if it accepts map cards. In any event, $200 for both is a bang up deal. The X67 is worth that easy.

WB you are a smart@&) but you do know what your talking about some times and for that we are thankful .
Now with that said don't let this go to your head!
I just bought the FishElite 480 and installed it on my boat. I have a Lowrance 520C in the front of my boat and needed something at my console. The only difference in the two is the 520C is color display. I fished yesterday for the first time since installing it and you can really see the color display better in the sunlight. Other than that, I like the unit. The 520c came with a decent map program installed. I think they call it Base Map. The 480 has no map installed. Luckily, I found a Hot Spots South card on the Classified forum for $55.
I have a regular Eagle 480 (no GPS), I've had that thing for close to 10 years and it still looks and works great, good detail like WB said. I also have the FishElite 640c which is a GPS unit and the GPS has been great on that one, far better GPS at slow speeds than my much more expensive HB unit. My 640 takes all of the Navionics Hotmaps chips, Premium South gives you 1' contours but not roadbeds, etc. Classic South gives you less detail on the contour lines, either 5 or 10' intervals but it has all of the roadbeds and house foundations on it. As others have said,, you can transfer waypoints back and forth by SD card but they can't be connected.
That's the funniest thing about Eagle....while they don't have all the whiz bang of the more expensive units, you just don't hear of folks having problems with them not working even though given the price point, you know there's a heaping ton of 'em out there. The dang things just keep fish finding and gpsing along year after year.
For example, I owned my 480 for, I think 4 years. Never removed it from the boat in all that time and it was stored in my carport through all kinds of temperature swings. It got rained on frequently from blowing wind under the carport too, but I never even gave a thought as to IF it would power up when I hit the button....now, the $600 unit on the front, it was major puckerage everytime I reached for the "PWR" button.
Anyway, talk with the Maj if you're on a budget and his units are suitable, if not, go for it on the Eagles.
