Default My Merc 75 4 stroke went 'Ka-Boom' today

When I made my regular oil check on my Merc 75 4 Stroke a couple fishing trips ago, I found I had way too much oil. I had only used it a couple times between oil checking, so thought there was a chance little or no damage was done. How wrong could I have been. Turns out one of the fuel pumps was bad and pumping gas into the engine. I installed new pumps, oil and filter, but too late, second trip out after oil change, bottm cylinder, hole in crank case, almost see the rod. I am thankful Maj was with me in his boat, but we pulled cranks about 3 miles back to the boat ramp. Caught a fair mess.
I am getting a couple prices on a new power head, but thought I could use a good 60 or so hp if anyone has one they wanted to get rid of. 75 is a little more than I want anyway.
Thought for the day: Guess it wouldn't hurt to check the oil every time on these Merc 4 strokes....
Please PM me if you can help.
    Thanks

Sorry to hear about your bad luck EZ. I check the oil in my 4 stroke Yamaha before I leave the house everytime I go. 4 strokes are famous for sticking rings if you run them a lot at slow speeds. When the rings stick it will also allow some gas to get into your oil. What I do is what Yamaha reccomends and I mix ring free at the proper amount with my gas ( one ounce per 10 gallons)...this is supposed to keep your rings from sticking. I also run the snot out of mine everytime out when I get through fishing. My motor is 5 years old now and has not made oil yet.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.
