'Cause you have no feel for where the TM is pointed when you hit the on switch causing you to miss steer. In tight cover, it'll cause you to spook the fish by bumping into your target or making you run the TM more to correct. The alternative is to take your eye off the water, look where it's pointed then steer, then hit the on button etc. I suspect the ones that say they have no problem, don't actually get in as tight to cover or don't get in as thick of cover as you and I probably do. It's one thing to be fishing tight to an isolated tree....it's quite another to be fishing inside the trees at say Bee Lake, or Cedar Hollow on Grenada.

I don't think having a quick disconnect for the PD/Terrova on one side and the Maxxum on the other is a bad idea. They are both flat so the one not being used wouldn't be in the way. You could also mount the PD plate on the top of a second Maxxum plate and use the single Maxxum base.
You really need to try a terrova in the trees before you make a $1,400 decision. Personally I wouldn't have a problem with it because I primarily fish open type of water and get in the trees on occasion. The Terrova foot pedal works fine unless you are the type that likes to stomp your foot pedal to see how fast it can change direction. If you keep your boat under control most of the time and can weave in and out of the trees then the PD/terrova would work just fine. Plenty of us have them if you want an on water demo to try it for yourself.

Yikes gives good advice too. The catch is, that an 80# Maxxum is a 800 dollar and the 80# Terrova is a $1200 experiment. That's 2K you could be out pretty easily. You know you'd like the Maxxum, I think you'd like the Terrova for all but 1 application. Ideally, you'd get both and quick mount them, but unless you're rich, I'm guessing that's out of the budget. If not, we should get to be very close friends.
The one catch with the Maxxum is that you have to attend to it at all times. Basically, to me, it's not useable for long lining or crankbaits. That's my gripe. However it's very well suited for spider rigging and single poling. I use the O/B for cranks and don't long line at all. However, I bought the PD for trying long lining and cranks. Strictly speaking, I single pole from the boat during maybe a month or two out of the year - we're talking 20 trips here max and some of those I might be out of the boat with waders depending. The rest of the year, the PD or Terrova in your case should be the bomb and I've got the O/B to fall back on if the batts give out cranking. Unless you fish inside the trees on the Delta lakes a lot, you and I probably fish a lot alike. If so, the Terrova would prolly work just great for ya. Then again, you know what to expect from the Maxxum if don't have the cash to experiment. Truth be told, it would only be a 150 to 250 experiment as either motor has a pretty good used marketability.

One other thing, If you decide on the Terrova, I'd spring for the one that's pre-installed with the I-pilot and the built in sonar - US2. One complaint I've heard with the spot lock and an external antenane is that it's whip around and pinch or break the external cable.
I wonder what the complete swing travel limit is on that motor - Like 360 or 380 degrees or if it's capable of being turned left or right continuously. If so, I wonder how they overcome that with an internal ducer which would have to be a continuous cable from the foot to the head. Just thinking outloud here, but I'd definitely pony up for the internal ducer and avoid the headaches.

Thanks guys. I jig fish the thick stuff often and I also spider rig the open water often. I never pull cranks or longline, so I guess it goes with out saying that the maxxum is prob the best bet for me. I thought I would like the wireless foot control, but paying 1400 for a tm is out of the question right now. I can/could keep fishing with the MG thats on there right now but its driving me crazy so I thought I would look into upgrading.

UPGRADES are awsome but usually the price of them will kick you in the butt
The Terrova can turn continuously and wrap your chord around like a candy cane so the internal US2 is the only way to go IMO.
The used market for each type of troller is an excellent suggestion especially if you can find one from one of our guys here in the Swap/Section.
If your not pullin cranks then I would avoid that notion all together. Take if from DonDon it can wreck your pocketbook if you mess around and get hooked. First it cost him a perfectly good Fish & Ski rig and his Big Feets peek-a-boo glasses are on the line for some of those fancy smancy electronics with side imaging. Oh God where will it end?

not til DD gets the ipilot or whatever that thingy is called
Got a couple of lines on some good sounding used Maxxums and even a Terrova. Take a gander over at BassboatCentral Trolling Motor board. There's a perfect Terrova 80 over thar for $750 minus the Ipilot and US2. So..guess what I'm saying is, it's not perfect, but almost a perfect price.
