The only reason these crops have not had mechanical harvesters developed is because of the cheap labor. It can be done on any type crop. You cut off illegals from working here and in six months You will have some mechanized grape harvesters created. they might not do as good a job as getting every single grape but they will be cost effective when you look at not having to pay a whole army year after year. Look at cotton. 50 years ago, We were still picking by hand and bagging it in sacks to carry to the gin. Now the latest is a 6 row machine that builds rectangular (Case IH) or round (John Deere) modules (bales) on the machine and sets down on the headland for pick up. A one man operation. 50 years ago. it took an army to pick and process. In my opinion, the industry needs to be mechanized completely and do away with all the unneeded jobs that are cheap labor anyway. Labor is the biggest headache and this is from an operators point of view. CF

They are called "Tree Shakers" and there is already a patent on them.

Reaper, Where Fish come to Fry
must not work to good if there not in widespread use
Cut out the illegals that are being used right now to do the harvesting and the tree shakers are the future. Like I said earlier, you won't get every one apple or orange but you will get the majority. also like all new technology, it can be improved on greatly. Wish I had the engineering smarts to come up with one John. CF

Obama must be reading this forum..I few weeks ago I suggested that we should be able to use the funds in our 401K to pay down a mortgage and low and behold this past week he suggests that we should be able to use 10 grand of it penelty free (notice he did not say tax free) as a "economic stimulus"..
I'm not sure how long ago you lived in Texas and California but circumstances have worsened quiet a bit in the last 2 years and in the South have gotten completely out of control. Illegals have become an issue in more ways than one. Curious that you left those places where cheap labor was so freely offered and moved to an area where the main harvest is mechanized.
The point of my input is that where I live, illegals are a problem. 35 miles from here Mexican gangs are running roughshod over the city they are in. Rapes are up over 300 percent with the rapist being primarily illegal Mexicans. Destruction of property and robberies are escalating beyond belief. Labor is only a portion of the problem. The fact that they come to America illegally shows a total disregard for our laws. This also causes higher taxes to pay for jails, court cases, additonal policeman, more itinerate medical bills to be covered by tax payers. So why should we be surprised when they do more damage, it costs them nothing.

If those you talk about are working here in American and have wives & children,As Americans we should promote there children with health care and education.....remember these people are here to work for a better life...how can we be against that,,,,how can we not admire what these people have to over come...the thing we were given by birth,, these people have to struggle just for a maybe one day acquire.............God Blessed America yet it is so hard for us to do the same for others? .........And it dont have to be![]()
I PRACTICE CATCH & FRY---DONT EVERYBODY ? Thumbs Up
I agree with Farmer. I grew up on a Dairy farm and saw us go from milking 20 head by hand to over 120 head with milkers. As the process becomes more mechanized, production goes up and cost goes down.
If we can put a rocket in space we can pick a frick'n grape. That dog don't hunt!
Look at tobacco. The biggest part of tobacco today is harvested by cheap illegel Mexican labor where I come from. I don't smoke but have you seen the price of cigaretts!? They ain't cheap.
Plus by converting the job over to machines you create good jobs. Somebody's gotta build the things.
Step back and look at the big picture instead of peep'n through a little hole people.
Just my 2 cent! Oh, that'll get a grape picked.
