Bodies by Drowning Pool was what I played before we left on missions in IRAQ.
Gotta share this, on our belated honeymoon in Ireland, downtown Dublin, I was following my wife around in a tourist trap/trinket store, buying keychains and whatnot for friends back home. I was listening to the music playing over the speakers, familiar - gordon lightfoot, wreck of the edmund fitzgerald. Then all of a sudden it hit me, that’s not the words I’m hearing. Turns out it was a song penned by an IRA political prisoner in jail, recorded by a fellow named Christy Moore, called back home in derry. Had to buy it once I figured all that out. I’m supposedly more english than the queen by dna. But my heart is with the Irish and I can’t help but to take the free Ireland side.

Odd you should mention lyrics. Unless it's a ballad where the story is quite clear, IE Marty Robbins, lyrics add nothing to my music experience. The voice is simply another instrument and the words are just notes to go along with all the other being played. Sure, there are some exceptions, but for the most part, I have no idea of what they are trying to say, nor do I care.
Rap is a no-go for me, have maybe half a dozen disco style songs on my Ipod. Lots of soundtracks from movies, lots of classical, oldies both pop and country. No current "country" and no currently hot rock bands.
My tastes in music are also all over the place. Thelonius Monk and charley parker and country and head banging rock and roll all fill in my cd collection of over 300 discs. Put one in the boom box lookin thing and let it run. There’s some that I can’t listen to, have to leave or turn them off. Emotions, memories. Toby Keith’s courtesy of the USA always strikes me hard. Run through the jungle by credence has been used in many movies about the Viet Nam war that I go back to junior high every time I hear it. Country tunes about kids and family also strike a chord. Some of the writers just get to the heart of it.
Another great song…
