I think one needs to read on what classifies a gun as an assault weapon.

I suspect most of the rifles we hear referred to as assault rifles are actually not that type weapon... It seems they are actually called assault style rifles, I guess that is referring to what the thing looks like rather than it's functionality..... I would think a fully automatic of some kind would cost you an arm and a leg in ammunition to use the thing for target practice.

I'm wondering if I'm being a little far fetched here. Being that Obamacare passed, will the Feds have access to medical records and to ones mental health, therefore stopping the purchase of a firearm? No doubt firearms have to be gotten out of the hands of nuts and out of those people with certain mental health issues. I bet they use Obamacare as a back door into peeking, actually overreaching into private information.
Will we be willing to allow this to stop the feeding frenzy on the 2nd amendment?

I do not see the need to ban private ownership of firearms whether for sport shooting, hunting or for self protection. I also do not see the problem with licensing each one for particular purposes nor for limiting magazine or clip capacity in part depending on the use intended. The government already knows who has most of the non-criminal firearms in this country and by any kind of sophisticated public Internet search can actually identify who has purchased or received what for modification with that giving grounds for ATF search warrants simply on that basis. Anybody with a conceal/carry permit is automatically identifiable.

I do not see the big deal over permanent semi-automatic guns either, like the so called assault rifles. All they really are is nothing more than a modified copy of military weapons that are designed to be rugged, accurate and dependable, the same qualities that would make them good choices for private purchases. I do have a very big problem with large capacity clips and conversion kits that change them to automatic fire. There is no need for them in any private issue, they are banned for hunting already in nearly every state, and are actually in the way for most pure target shooting.

Most importantly however is that there are some individuals in this country who should not under any circumstances have access to firearms, but sorting them out from the rest of us with legitimate purposes is going to be a very difficult task. Most of the damage those persons cause come from a small group of mostly adolescent and young men who are both the most common violators and the most common victims, with the worst cases generally being suicides planned to have dramatic impacts on innocent strangers.

That's where I would start to deal with gun crime, and those have to be caught ahead of time, since the worst of them are already planning not to be taken alive in the first place; so penalties for commission are irrelevant to them. Guns are already the prime tool in most suicides anyway, whether or not someone else is killed first.

Hopefully not, but I don't think wanna be gang banger out to rob me is shooting 100 rounds a week, maybe no need for a vest. But if mister gang banger wanna be gives me a chance, he better hope he has a vest. Right now, 120 feet, he doesn't want me to shoot....

That aint gonna help you if the shooter is a good shot.

Private citizens are not allowed to possess guns in China. So what happens? Two dozen children are injured by stabbing by a local villager a couple of weeks ago. I guess they will ban knives now - then baseball bats and bricks, etc. Also, who is to determine who is "sane" to possess firearms in this country - our government? I dare not to believe. A very dangerous, fine line of our civil rights. We must be very careful with this issue. Just my two cents.

Whatever you wish and are allowed to do by the owner of the forum. But remember you just brought a forbidden topic into the discussion, a discussion that needs to be made in its own right. Your thread but you are not the ultimate owner of any part of this forum, nor am I.

Those who know guns best, need to be a part of any solution to the problem of keeping them out the hands of those who should never have access to them. Whatever your role in this thread I do not like your hijacking the original theme into a topic that should by rule move this whole thing into the obscurity of Far Off Topic.

Your allies in Congress are in the process of self-destructing and the NRA is fading. No skin off my nose, if you don't want to have a constructive role in the final outcome. I will make you a prediction: You will see Hillary Clinton on the Supreme Court before the next four years are over. Run your thread however you damn well please, like I said no skin off my nose. If you can't face reality, that is your problem.
