I remember , when placing long distance calls, the operator would come on the line and get the number you were calling from so it could be billed to your account. I also remember on a few occasions my mother calling the phone company to protest long distance calls where someone else had given our number to the operator. Most people were honest enough but there were a few that weren't, some things don't change.

That's funny. Reminds me of when me and my buddies would take a road trip somewhere for a few days to camp and fish (not many lakes and rivers in West Texas, so we had to travel far). I'd call the operator and say that I'd like to make a collect call and charge it to my home number. I was calling a girlfriend at the time, actually a few times I did this. The operator would come back on the line and say "that's fine, but your mother wants you to call her as well". Well, I always did. She would scold me about being gone for days and calling girl friends and not home. Couldn't help myself - that's the way I rolled.
