It was cold and windy on Jordan. I stayed in the S-turns and Haw. I got shut out. The baitfish is so thick in the S-turns right now, that my sonar just doesn't work--and this is throughout acres of water!! How many tons of food is that!? Last weekend, I was able to discern a nice arcs in, over, and under the clouds on my sonar, but this week--nothing. Even where I could see through the minnow mass there were no arcs--anywhere! Where did they go? Jigging spoon, jigs, minnows--nothing. I wonder if Special K's suggestion of 45' would have paid off?

I fished mainly around the 64 bridge today. The fishing was slow 100yds S of the bridge, and there weren't nearly the number of large arcs showing on the screen. Like yesterday, I am wondering where they went. Under the bridge, you could catch as many 3-9" crappie as you could stand. The keepers I caught were near the mile marker buoy S of 64, and 25-100yds N 64. Late in the day, they started moving shallower. There was a boat who was fishing under the bridge who left early--reportedly with a limit. He was the first boat to set up under the bridge, so maybe he harvested the first-fruits; but yet I'm a little skeptical, since I never saw him catch a nice one (of course I wasn't watching the whole time), and some others I talked to had caught few or nil keepers under there. I ventured down to the s-turns, but same story as yesterday--no arcs, no keepers, just bait.

Donald met me at Seaforth...but my trolling battery was dead...permanently. A "quick" trip to Walmart for a free exchange and back we were. By the time we launched, the armada was thick, but no one seemed to be catching many so we headed south through the S-turns and up just short of Robeson. Nothing--in several spots...actually, once we turned the corner to head north away from the dam, the water was 38F--not bait. The S-turns were full of bait, but we couldn't find the fish. We ended up back at 64 about 1:30 with a big zero in the cooler. We looked around to see a few dinks being caught sporadically by the waning flotilla. But...success! Donald and I caught seven solid fish in a fairly short time. I'm sure other boats figured them out, but in the couple hours we fished 100yds N of 64, I didn't see anyone else boat a keeper (of course I watched a fraction of the boats a fraction of the time). 5 of 7 were caught on jigs, including the 2 13.5" slabs. The bite was triggered much like I triggered strikes last fall at Farrington--erratic boat movements side to side. I pulled our baits up though the strike zone and let them settle back through. That's when the keepers hit. I lost a 13.5" at the boat...but since I pulled it up from so deep, I was able to casually pluck it out of the water 10sec later! I'm glad I did, too, because this was the fattest crappie I have ever caught...get this...

    13.5"...1lb 14oz! It's gut was almost 4" across!

    Close the book on 2010.

Great report Jeremy... Glad to hear you and PG24 were able to find some fish. It sounds like you worked hard for 'em
and covered a whole lot of water. Good job!!!

i believe on christmas eve i'm the boat you are speaking of, yes i did catch my limit but ya had to weed through 20-25 to get one decent one. while i was there a carolina skiff set up shop beside me. i went back 12-30 and like you tried the river with no luck but marked the same tons of shad, ended up at the ol 64 bridge and ended up with 10 keepers and several throw backs. i saw a small aluminum boat with bee ready holders come by and sat infront of me a while was that you?

After nearly three years, I'm retiring the original 3-year running "Quick Report" thread and will make a new one for each year. For the Jan1, 2011 report, see "Quick Report 2011".
