It was all about flipping a jig today. The crappie hit it on the fall back to the boat...and man did they hit it hard! I was using a short shank 1/16 oz jig with the usual gold/chart tube. Most of the fish were 3-5' down, but a couple hit it at the surface on the first casts to some laydowns.

The fish still echoed over the hump and PVC, but would not bite for me--perhaps I should have tried ajigging spoon? I looked back at last year's reports and found the same to be true by this time. Once I get my 18hp 4-stroke Nissan tuned up, it will be time for Jordan Lake!

I finally had the opportunity to fish will Bill. He knows how to fish! We fished Farrington mainly, but added two more a couple miles south. Chief outfished me about 4-1 and with fewer poles. I think use a bullet weight rather than a bottom weight...or maybe Chief just holds the pole right. It was good fishing! The best part was that when I got back to work, the day seemed half as long! As soon as The Raleigh Lake shuts off, I'm ready for Jordan Lake!
It was nice to say hi to PopPop and SeaSons--glad to hear you all hauled them in to!

It was a fairly productive day overall. Nothing huge, but plenty of pulls. Although it wasn't my best spot today, I was most satisfied fishing over my PVC. I ended up taking 5 11.5-13" fish off it and missed 4 more (and some of those felt really big). But it was my favorite spot today because it was in the teeth of the wind and if I could tight-line a jig in it, I would feel a crack eventually. Basically, if I could control the boat, I was rewarded with a fish. The hump also paid off with three fat fish. Several other spots yielded fish as well. They had definitely moved closer to the bottom, which limited the number of strikes on a flipped jig. The fish are getting fat! Even though today was still good in numbers and size, I sense the end of the good fishing is near (unless I can figure out that lake in the winter!)

I caught most of my fish just north of the 64 bridge--in fact, I'm pretty sure I was near where "I mac" caught his yesterday. I caught about 30 keepers on brush piles today--and about 20 of those came off of one in particular. I think the color made a huge difference today, plus being able to watch my jig on the depth finder. I would literally hold the jig inches above the brush pile--any deeper and I would be retying (and I did many times). I watched several fish come up and hit my jig. Minnows would catch fish too, but jigs were the most effective crappie hoist today. I hope this pattern holds for my parents visit late this coming week! Farrrington was loaded with some kind of non-biting fish---didn't get a bite up there and didn't see anyone else pull one in. I stayed on the brush using a marker buoy thrown upwind from the spot. The wind was moderate and steady, and my trolling motor was very tired by the end of the day. If I go again tomorrow, I will be without my best color...I left them all in the brush piles! Thank you all for the Jordan reports; you helped put me on fish today.
