    Default Crappie spawn.

Been fishing Randleman now for several years and never seen a spawn like this. Finding very few fish shallow but not like usual. This weekend was catching fish in 20' of water trolling, temp at 76 degrees. They were big females full of eggs. Any idea when these fish will move shallow.

I agree with you it has been a most interesting spawn. We fished a crappie tournament every weekend from late January to the end of March. I saw big females being caught every Saturday, even in January. We don't keep females during the spawning season, so I am out of crappie fillets. We went to Harris on Saturday and caught over 60, but only 9 keepers. Never seen so many small crappie. I brought 9 home to eat. Two were males and the other seven were females still with eggs. I thought the spawning season was over; but to my surprise, it is not. We fished from 8'-16' and fish were just about every place we went. We didn't catch any of the large tournament-size females, so I assume they have definitely spawned and gone somewhere.

My suggestion is to try shallow and work out deep. Don't be surprised were you will find them this year.

They don't always spawn shallow. It just depends on the available area and etc. I'd say there are also some competition for bedding location. With everything going later than normal, different species maybe running into one another.

Pretty sure the spawn is running late throughout the piedmont. Was at Harris on Saturday, didn't seem like much spawn was happening, if any, in the coves.

Maybe. I know the bream and bass spawn is just starting to ramp up. I've never had luck finding crappie on the beds, not sure what's wrong with me lol.

This is the strangest Spring in a while. Fished High Rock Saturday and the females we caught had eggs. Caught males with broken tails like they been making beds somewhere... but we didnt catch them in “spawning” spots.
I agree w JordanLimit ... start shallow & work out deep; no telling where they will be.

Agree with the post above the females I caught this weekend were full of eggs. They were extremely shallow and bunched up tight to cover. With the temps leveling out this week it should start to straighten things out.

    Hi Chadillac,

We've been catching egg filled females for at least a month.

Im a bank fisherman and I personal think the spawn is over and done...been out to my favorite spots 3-4 times and literally caught nothing. For sure the crappies are not shallow unless I’m doing something wrong, but always had great success every year except this year. . I’m hoping the spawn is not over yet but the way it’s been going for me, I’m afraid to make long ride to Jordan Or high rock.
