    I wouldn't think that it would be acidic skin oil causing the melting .... if it just started 2 months ago. More likely something he's done around the rods/reels since right before he started noticing the melting.
    Line usually doesn't "melt" from heat exposure, unless it's extremely high temps. It just gets weak and breaks easily. Melting would require extreme temps or chemical contact.
