Sounds like it may have gotten exposed to some kind of chemical. Don't think anything but extreme heat would cause that.

Got a ? I've got a friend of mine said that he has line melting on his rods and the knob on the reels where you tighten the spools were getting soft any idea what would be causing this. His boat stays in his garage when not in use. He said that it just started bout 2 months ago

I just moved here from Phoenix. It ain't the heat. Probably suntan lotion or bug spray.
It's some kind of a oil or chemical. Ask him if he uses hand sanitizer when fishing or handling his reels. I had an umbrella given to me at work that had the handle melting on it. Sticky and soft mushy feeling. Could have gotten gas on it.Let us know if you find out!

Anything that has deet in it will melt certain plastics , combined with 90 degree heat or higher. It made the rubber shoulder stock on my benlli gummy.

my money is on deet aswell
I talked to my friend awhile ago and he said that they put sunscreen on while they are on the boat. He told me that they use the liquid and they also use the spray which would get all over everything

May be the lotion but more likely the propellant in the spray.
I wear cacoon shades over my regular glasses and over time the oil from my skin desolves the ear pieces. They just melt away.
