What you experienced today is one of the reasons we are taking the Chief's advice--go artificial. With the heat and so much bait available, they may just be half-hardheartedly biting.

Time to give Jordan a visit this morning. Spent most of morning feeding minnows to short strikers. They did not have must interest in the jigs either. After burning 10 dozen minnows at a 1.89 a dozen, I ended up with 12 short crappies, a mr. whiskers and 2 keepers of 10 in.
What is the answer when they want to just grab the back half of the minnow?

Yup. Chartreuse glitter, blue and silver glitter works well on sunny days.

If it's like my home lake right now there is so much bait these fish are just not really interested right now but it won't be lng before they are and will be much bigger.
