Thread: Kayak crappie

Oh yeah, seeing those crappie on a stringer reminded me of something that happened to a guy in a kayak down this way, in Town Creek. I guess the dude had a stringer of crappie hanging from his kayak, just like you did, and a hungry gator saw an easy meal. The kayak got tipped over and the gator made off with the fish. The guy went in the water, but the gator didn't mess with him. But still, kinda sketchy. Don't know if you guys have gators up that way, but they're everywhere down here. I've always fished from canoes and had plenty of gators within casting distance, but I've never had a problem. Still, it doesn't hurt to keep your eyes peeled!

They say there are gators in the neuse river and creeks but I haven't seen any where I normally fish. I think they would be pretty inactive by now as cold as it is.

Caught these today. Not many crappie but a nice mix of panfish. All fish cut on small pieces of raw shrimp. The best panfish bait I have found.

Welcome to C.C. I live and fish NE of Greenville and fish the rivers and creeks. The crappie have a lot more choices of location in those waters than they do in many lakes. You have to figure out their patterns every time you go. Where they were yesterday doesn't mean that that is where they are today. Just a shift in the wind that effects the water level can change the whole game, and that can happen in just a few hours. The flow in a creek can suddenly reverse and it's a time to figure out where they went. I love it; it keeps you on your toes.

Ya, river and creek fishing is (to me) a lot tougher than lake fishing. Schools are smaller, no huge bait pods to look for, and like you said they move. Far and often. The one I'm fishing is tidal so throw that into the mix and it can be frustrating. Like "I caught 20 here yesterday, and not a bite within 50 yards of here today. What's going on."
