Thread: Humminbird SI transducer placement

Hey guys I was wondering where I should place my transducer on my transom I don't have a jackplate. The paper that came with the unit shows an x through the pic of it mounted on the transom with a motor with no jackplate. Will it shoot across the motor if the motor isn't set back off the transom? Trying to eliminate drilling a bunch of hole trying to find the right placement. It is being mounted on a 2002 triton tr 186.

You'll still get pretty good reception, but you'll be able to see some noise/interference on the side with the motor. You might try sticking the transducer to a stick/thin board and have someone hold it in the water about where you want to mount it while you idle along and look at your unit. The motor will block part of your signal and cause the noise. The farther the transducer is from the motor, the more room for your signal to get out.

Vic is right. If you can get it below the motor mounting plate the better it will be. Mine is lower than jackplate and I still get a little interference on the the left/port side on the SI but it's minimal and up in the water column.

I've done something similar to Vic's idea, but I used a 1x4 and then a C-clamp to mount the board to the transom. That way, I could try different positions to get the least interference and do it at different speeds. It's not for planing speeds, though--trust me on that.

I put it on trolling motor only to find out doesn't work, needs 2-5 mph to work best and from what I've been seeing 5 mph would be better. Still experimenting.

It works real good and I use it going .5 miles an hour most of the time.

Welcome to the site kjack! Your way would be the best for a boat with full-width transom, for sure! Sounds like you got some first hand experience trying to put the boat on plane with the board clamped on....lol. Probably quite a rooster tail there!

Welcome to the site kjack! Your way would be the best for a boat with full-width transom, for sure! Sounds like you got some first hand experience trying to put the boat on plane with the board clamped on....lol. Probably quite a rooster tail there!

The rooster tail didn't last long...I was fishing in the saltwater in Washington State and hit a piece of kelp or whatever. Ended up losing the board, C-clamp and transducer.

This is my 2007 Triton with my Humminbird 998 SI / DI, NO problems. I added a piece of plastic tube to the top of the transducer, so I wouldn't have to constantly stick my hand in the cold water to push the transducer back down in the winter cold water. IT IS EASILY REMOVABLE .
