the reason you have never heard of someone getting hurt by lining off a bouy is that not too many people are gonna try it.
All great points. How about if the trotline pulls you out and then you some how get hooked. In that current, it'll drown you quick.

I've had 2 buddies get trotlines in their prop on Truman and I can tell you I don't like the dam things at all. At least you can see jugs.

Plus there is the hooks to watch out for. I would be more worried about the hooks getting me with the unstable line. We never see anybody trying to trotline in the middle of the river except for this one time tied to a bouy. Everyone else has more sense.

Like I said, some folks are comfortable running lines in current some aren't. If you aren't, then yes, its a good idea to stay out of it.

And for the record, no, I don't attach my lines to a buoy. Mine aren't designed to be deployed that way. However, many times I have sunk my lead (le-ed) weight yards away from a buoy and use the buoy as a secondary marker.

PP, if you've never seen someone running lines in the middle of the river, then A) you haven't fished the river very much, or B) you're not out earlier or late enough to see them do it. 90% of the time my commercial lines were set in the channel or adjacent to it. And, FYI, several of the state record bluecat have been caught near the center of the channel.

But, back to my original point. I see no reason to call someone an idiot or moron for not knowing about that law. Its seldom ever talked about and dang dear impossible to find in any reg books. I equate that to the same as someone not knowing about the law that states you cannot sit on the top part of the upright section of your boat seat while in motion, which I see done all the time before people come up on plane or while trailering their boat.

We fish the Missouri a LOT. Every weekend when weather permitting and all times of day. Fished both days last weekend. When it is hot we get there at daylight or fish late in the evening. Fished all night several nights. That is the first time to see a line in the middle of river attached to a bouy. Commercial fishing for catfish is illegal in Missouri. Just saying running a trotline in the main Missouri River channel is a good way to drown your ass.

LMAO!... since when? A guy gets called an idiot moron for not knowing about a seldom talked about law regarding tying trotlines to a nav bouy, and then in the same thread someone suggests that commercial fishing for catfish in Missouri is illegal...?.?

Nothing personal folks, but that is irony at its finest!

The Wildlife Code of Missouri 3 CSR 10-10.725 (4) May 16-Oct.31 on the Missouri downstream from Highway 169 to Miss. River all game fish (cats, paddles & shovelnose) may not be possessed or transported by commercial methods or while possessing commercial gear. Shall be returned to water unharmed immediately. (5) From Nov. 1- May 15 on the Missouri downstream from Highway 169 to Miss. River all game fish may not be possessed or transported by commercial methods or while possessing commercial gear. Shall be returned to water unharmed. So I think that means no commercial fishing for catfish. This rule book can be found where ever you get your license.

You said in Missouri, not on the Missouri.

    I've got a rule book.

ya commercial fishing is definatly legal in missouri. its even still legal on some parts of the missouri river, just cant harvest game fish like cats. I have seen some guys running nets for carp amd buffalo, although very few times.
I stick to my guns, I would never tie a line to a bouy. just seems dangerous to me. not because of too much current but just because its a bouy and I stay clear of em.
and like slabho, I fish the fast flow. the blues really like fast water. I regularly anchor down on the edge of the channel and drift the channel. I would anchor down in the channel if it weren't illegal. if I ran lines I would most certainly have at least one line off the very tip of a wingdike stretched out into the channel. another on an outside bend, stretched into the channel. lots of folks do this and often times these are the same guys who regularly catch the most and biggest blues. if ya look close there are many lines run in the channel all over the washington area. too many dang trot lines if ya ask me.
