how is affixing a line to a river bouy dangerous? for one thing those bouys are attached to a fairly long cable and the bob and weave in the current like a prize fighter, try to run a trotline that is giving you slack one minute then pulling against you the next. your not gonna be able to steady it and it might just pull you right out of the boat. next scenario; because the bouy isn't stable its gonna pull slack into the trot line. this slack will allow a bow to the line toward the down river side of the bouy, which is the side you will approach with a boat. get that line hung up in the prop, get turned around backwards in the current and your boat will sink in seconds. gaurenteed. if you run the 'sippi a lot then you probably know this already.
the reason you have never heard of someone getting hurt by lining off a bouy is that not too many people are gonna try it.

All great points. How about if the trotline pulls you out and then you some how get hooked. In that current, it'll drown you quick.

I've had 2 buddies get trotlines in their prop on Truman and I can tell you I don't like the dam things at all. At least you can see jugs.

For someone who seems so concerned with that law, can you tell me one instance in which a trotline that was tied off to a buoy has caused damage, injury, or inconvenience to anyone or anything? I've never heard of it happening in 20+ years of running the Mississippi, and there is probably 3 times the amount of markers on it than there are on the Missouri. I'm not saying there isn't a good cause for the law, but I sure haven't heard of it. And, if the C.O.E. is so danged concerned about their markers, you'd think they'd keep better track of them.

You call a guy an idiot and a moron for not knowing a law that quiet frankly, most others don't either. It's not mentioned anywhere in the annual fishing brochure published by Missouri, nor the Wildlife Game Code booklet, nor can it be found through a cursory search of the C.O.E. Federal Regulations guidance.
