    Default Quick cooking question...

I cannot ever seem to get it even halfway close so thought I'd ask you all. I was just wondering how many fish you figure per person when cooking for a fish fry. I know there are many variables, such as what other sides etc. there are, but just wanting to get a rough idea what everyone else does. Tomorrow we are having Christmas Eve Christmas at my mom's house and crappie is what I'm bringing and everyone is pretty excited. Probably be 12-15 adults and 5 kids or so. I'm going to cook 45 fish...I know we'll have leftovers with all the sides etc. but better safe than sorry. I personally thoroughly enjoy leftover crappie and would actually rather have cold crappie the next morning than hot fresh crappie...I love them both though, just saying. Hope everyone is, or getting ready to, enjoy their family and friends for the holidays!!!

I usually try to plan 3 crappie per person so 6 pieces each when there are other dishes to be eaten. Just tried mixing a little Sriracha hot chili sauce with tarter sauce last week when we fried some up and it if you like some spice, it's the way to go! Of course, just eaten them plain is good too. Have a great time and Merry Christmas! Hope you have some left over for a Christmas morning breakfast!

If the fillets are big I'll cut 'em. I dont like cooking pieces bigger than the size of your 3 fingers and I figure a man will eat 5 pcs at the most, a woman will eat 3 pcs and a child will eat 2 pcs. So with 12" crasppie you get 4 pcs per fish...the crowd you mentioned = 20 fish will be more than enough (40 fillets cut into halves). Smaller fish will take more...9"-10" fish for the crowd = 35 fish (70 fillets) You'll have fish left over too.Thumbs Up

BTW, if the crowd is bigger than the amount of fish on hand then use ALOT (and I mean ALOT) of salt!RoflRofl

My crowd likes the fish better than the rest of stuff, they usually eat 3-5 fish per adult kids differ they the small ones are usually full of grandma treats by the time we eat and do not account for many fish.

Thanks everyone for the replies!!! I forgot to count how many people where there...Either way, I don't think there was one person who didn't leave with at least some fish to take home for breakfast...OOPS! Oh well, I'm 100% sure there won't be one wasted fillet other than the one I dropped on the ground instead of the friar when I was cooking it. I'd say the average person, of those that ate fish, at probably 2 fish each. There were a ton of side dishes though and just as many desserts. I think in the future if it were a straight fish fry with beans, cole slaw or a few other sides with out as many desserts etc. I would figure about 3 fish per person. I really appreciate the replies as well. The only problem is now my fish supply is running low...Looks like I'll be hitting the water Monday and Tuesday and maybe Wednesday if the squirrels aren't calling my name.

Just what i was thinking Beagle.I will wash it off and rebread it if i have to but it aint going in the trash.
There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.
