And as a customer, my philosophy is, if throwing in a few minnows extra will make or break a business, perhaps they should consider a new enterprise. That being said, I got to Dick's late today after he locked up and had to go to J and B Outdoors for my minnows for the morning. The old guy literally took fists full of minnows and slid them through his index finger and thumb while dropping them one by one into my bucket like he was counting change. But he did say "I'll give you a few extra". (I held back my comment "Well, make sure you don't give me Willie and Flipper-I know they are your favorite minnows, and I hate to see a grown man cry!). Even the younger counter help guy that walked me back to the tank was shaking his head at how long it took when I gave him the stink-eye. When he was ringing me and another guy who got minnows out, he commented (apologetically) that he counts minnows a lot different that this guy does. Just sayin. Not saying they suck, because at least they have minnows, but I'll stop by Dick's over my lunch hour from here on out.
Some of you seriously don't get it. When a man asks for a shot of whiskey, do you go grab your wife's measuring cup to pour him a glass?! Come on folks, a man asking for a dozen minners isn't asking for you to count them.

I decided the last couple days that I am going to set up a minnow holding tank in my garage for at least the spring crappie season. I have a 110 Frabil aerator on order, going to find a ten gallon car-boy tank, water treatment, fish flake food and a water filter. I can get this all for $40 and then have minnows waiting for me and don't have to work on other people's schedule. Plus, I don't have to dump extra minnows in the grass after my weekend is over-running a D-battery powered aerator gets pricey for long term maintenance. Plus, I can load up when I get to a good bait shop and hold them.

It's not my store and in no way was I upset. Not sure who the competition is that kicks their butts but it must be a nice place. I guess I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would complain about getting what they paid for and then make a big deal out of it. If you prefer going out of your way to get a extra dozen minnows or two over what you paid for have at it. I've bought minnows at about every shop and Marina around Truman and can't say I would not go back to any of them because I got a bad minnow count. If I'm in their area and need minnows I will stop at the closest place and buy them. If you needed 5 dozen and asked for 3 and that's what you got then ask them for a couple dozen more minnows. Guess I really don't understand what all the drama is about over some minnows.
I buy my minners from the bait store that has the best minner count on my way to the lake. I drive by 4 different bait shops and all have minners, it's nice to know what others have experienced with those other stores and maybe one of them might be a better choice then the others.
And about the drama, well, I stated some hard truths about a particular store and so the drama came from those who didn't like or agree with what I said. Unless your new on the internet, that's nothing new.
And yes, a good minner count is a great thing. You get more for your money. It's simple. Really.![]()

Guess if your lucky enough to have 4 choices you can have your pick. If I fish my normal areas I only truly have 3 choices with out driving out of the way 15 miles to Bucksaw or Tightwad C store. One of the places here in town is only open a few days a week and is hit or miss. The other out at the lake opens later than I would want to start most days but try and use them from time to time to help keep them going for the days I do need them. So that leaves me Everhart's which is a mile or so from the house. I personally have always got good minnow counts there but I also spend a lot of money in there over the last 10 years. May have something to do with the minnow count I get or it may not. Who knows. Through out winter its hard to be very picky as most shops close for the winter or do not carry minnows until closer to the spawn. Which also makes no sense to me. When I get my tackle shop opened up I will be the 5th shop on your way to the lake and will try to be sure to give a great deal on minnows for customers. No more debate's on bait. Lets catch some damn fish on these minnows where ever we all decide to buy them.
Fogot to add that I heard at the tournament Saturday that Fuzzy's I believe it was called had some good sized minnows down toward the Osceola end of the lake.
There was a bait shop in Tunica, MS near the Tunica cutoff. The girl who worked there was drop dead gorgeous!!! she would come to work in shorty shorts and a tank top every day and sell minnows. They had a line out the door every morning to buy minnows. I think it had something to do with her leaning over the tank to scoop them out.. She could have sold 7 minnows to the dozen and no one would have complained. It's all about marketing I guess.
Back on subject, I don't fish Truman often enough. Usually once a year, twice if I'm lucky. I always try to patronize Everhart's EVERY time I'm up there. Great folks, great selection and NEVER felt slighted on my minnow count.
Let's all settle down now and go fishing.
