Measure your minnow rig against the length of your rod.

What about when your fishing deeper than the length of your rods. What type of reels are you using?

They make a portable rod stretcher for winter, deep water crappie fishing. Assists in deep water line depth. I believe Lake Way Outdoors in Grenada has them in stock.

I use 16' rods, have a piece of yellow painters tape at 12',8',4' and the butt is 16. Rod tips are usually 6"-1' off the water. I drop the egg weight on the minnow rig to where ever and use the tape as my measuring guide

On a 16' rod, every joint is 5'4". 14'ers are 4'9". These are both three piece rods. Fishing deeper than the Rod length just stand up and guess how far below the butt of the Rod your weight is. You can also use the Depth Hunter metered braid for the exact measurements.

Mark a 2' section above your handle and measure you your line 2' at a time.
