Why, doesnt this defeat the purpose, kinda like a chain, only as strong as the weekest link. This set up would not have saved me a single bait at Sardis the other day.

Some people talk about respooling their reels every year with mono. And some 2 and 3 times during the year due to breakage. I spooled mine in 2004, haven't respooled since. Maybe retie a few broken snap swivels over the years. $1.50 for 100 yards of mono, $2.50 for 100 yards of Power Pro. I think I'm ahead of the game.
I've lost my share of baits and rigs over the years, but not the main line.
The last time we fished the cut off, slow troll. I had 6 poles out with 6 jigs on each. 2 oz. sinker was set at 12 foot. We were filling the cooler. I hit something that didn't show on the fish finder. All I got back was a swivel on all 6 poles. I rebaited 6 new rigs, avoided that area, caught our limit and went home.

Pushing JIGS I can see using a mono leader simple because they are a lot cheaper to loose than cranlbaits. The only reason for me to go to braid is the retrieval factor and using a 10# leader defeats that in the cranking game.
As far as cost, I can realpolitik 15 reels for around 7 bucks, cheap enuff.
May make the switch to braid but it will only be to help me retrieve baits.

We were fishing 2 years ago, Debbie and the oldest grandson, Jacob. I hung a bandit while pushing, 20 foot in 23 foot of water. I went to retrieve it. I heard Jacob say, "now granddad is recycling fishing lures along with everything else." I broke the line, rebaited and went along our way. Passed the area some 45 minutes later and the bandit was floating for us. It was a bad day, most were about 4 inches, 6 keepers, over 100 caught. Debbie said, "with this rate we need to go back to jigs and minnows."

I know the reason for using Hi-Vis line while spider rigging, but why would it be necessary for pulling cranks?
