Wanted: One roofing crew in Northern Louisiana.

Things are moving along slowly. We've ran into a few unexpected issues but have them figured out and are finally making some progress. They don't use drip edge down here and I want to eventually finish the eaves in aluminum so we are putting drip edge on. The first problem is they didn't run the roof sheathing all the way to the fascia board so I had nothing to nail the drip edge to. We are having to cut the bottom edge of the sheathing and remove it then add a 1x4 in it's place. Took a while to figure out a solution and a couple of trips to Lowes to get the right supplies but what we're doing is working nicely.

There is also a enclosed patio on the back of the house that has a hand framed hip roof. When we striped the shingles from this I found that the hand framed roof had been added on top of the original flat roof. Whoever framed it didn't strip the two layers of old roofing, which is close to two inches thick, or two pieces of steel drip edge that were buried under the new framing. I spent 6 hours getting the tar chipped off and the two drip edges removed, then had to remove the fascia board and raise it two inches. Time consuming but now it's done as right as we could do it.

After running our ice and water and synthetic under layment we finally were able to start laying shingles yesterday at noon. We were able to get the porch roof done and the back side of the house 75% finished. Hopefully today we"ll make good progress as well. With luck we will be done early on Sunday. Luckily the weather is perfect, high 50's low 60's, sunny and no wind. No chance of rain until Wednesday next week.

As a side note, I did make one terrible mistake. Bean soup should NEVER be on the lunch menu for any kind of project. It was darn good and when I said no wind, well there was some wind being produced.

Jeff, I got up to look at Finch Lake on Wednesday and in the spring we are going to have to give it a try. Decent launch and very fishy looking. Might turn out to be another boat ride through the woods but I think we can find a few biters.

Time to make the coffee, I'll try to give an update tonight after dark. If I can stay awake that long. Man, I need a vacation!
