Steve, down here they run a 1x6 fascia board with a 1x2 at the top then let the shingles hang over the edge a couple of inches. Same way all across the south. Last spring when I was at my daughters in Atlanta I had to fix an area that the shingles had "rotted out" along the eave and when it rained water would run in behind the fascia board. I'll be putting a new roof on for her soon so I just slid a piece of coil stock under the shingles a couple of rows up and over the edge, a temporary band aid till later.
I've owned several houses in La. and they all had metal drip edge's. Even my new house in Tn. But we do appreciate you coming down and fixing the house's that don't. Sorry you didn't get to fish more.
