    Default Lake St Clair

Thinking of going to Lake St. Clair to do some crappie and general fishing. Just have a small Pondtoon boat with 20HP motor. Where would I start to look for some fairly protected calm water?? Thanks for any good leads! Any fishing camps or resorts in protected water??

I see you hail from PA. Are you planning on running around to this side of the lake since you posted in the MI forum? I don't know that body of water like some of the Michigan members do, but up in the Anchor Bay end used to be good. Hang tight and some of the east side people might just chime in and give you some good ideas.

There's plenty to see/do here in MI. How far are you willing to travel to do some sight seeing? I'm sure some folks would be glad to give you some tips on places to go/things to see.

My experience with LSC is pretty limited. The fishery is great. Tons of bass, perch, and walleye. Not really sure on the crappie population there. As Don mentioned, Anchor bay is a hot spot for a ton of anglers. There is also a Marina called "Gino's" that is pretty popular with fisherman. If you search any reports online, you will probably come across dozens of comments with "Gino's" being somewhere in them. LSC can get pretty rough with the right wind. The Detroit river is to the south and the St. Clair river to the North. Walleye are abundant in both of them and vertical jigging is usually the strategy. This time of year, the fish are in "Deep" runs in the river (over 30 feet). 3/4oz and 1oz jigs are the norm. Usually tipped with a minnow or crawler this time of year. White bass are also pretty thick and it is not uncommon to catch 100 or so in pretty short order.

I know there are a couple of bait shops in the area that will be more than willing to help you out and give you some good insight on where to start.

I have been looking all over on the internet for a good spot. Not sure how I found this latest place. Because of the type of boat I have and the size of the lake decided maybe St Clair is not good for me. A lot further to go but looking at Carp/Paradise Lake near Mackinaw. Better size lake for me, has some nice places to stay and great location for some sight seeing. Still trying to decide, when your in your 70's trips are hard on you, great once you are there and the fish start biting!!!

So if you are thinking about someplace that has "calm, family friendly" water and accommodations, I might suggest a place that we held one of our crappie camps at a few years back...Waffle Farms Campground on Randall Chain-o-Lakes outside Coldwater. They have two or three cottages right on the water and the chain of lakes is perfect for a pontoon. I don't know what you are looking for, or how far you want to travel to sight see, but there are some good orchard/vineyards to the west along with Lake Michigan. Granted, it's not northern Michigan, which in my book is hard to beat. Just another idea to throw in your hat Zinger.

I think Waffle Farms is just what I'm looking for. Checked it all out on line. Emailed them and got some more info. No cabins until after Labor Day. I'll see how my fall goes and maybe try October or wait until spring, May should be good I would think. Thanks again!!!

Late May/early June in southern MI should put you right at spawn for crappie/gills.
