It could be worse, my friend from the UP called me this morning and said they currently had 7 inches of new snow with a foot expected by tonight. Prior to that they had grass showing and all the snow was gone.

    Yes, yes, and yes.

Many fish over 10lbs being caught right now. Females are staging in the rivers and will be a matter of 4 or five days before the girls spawn and return to Erie. The males will be in for quite awhile. Warm rain from the last few days will produce run off that will warm the water to the required spawning temperature. The river will muddy up quite a bit because of this but should be okay.

Go to baits are 3/4oz jigs with stinger hooks. Minnows work good but are a pain in the but. paddle tail worms (called Wyandotte worms) in brown and black are most common with Fin-S minnows (blue ice, emerald ice, purple ice, and black ice) being most common. Go to colors in bright days are Antifreeze (called Candy Chartreuse) followed by green Chartreuse, blaze orange, and hot pink. For darker days, black, candy gold, candy purple, and purple are the hot colors.

Trenton channel is good this time of year. Target the 8 to 10 foot section on the West side of the river (below the Edison plant) first thing in the AM. Move out to the middle (14ft of water) later as the boat traffic picks up. Be prepared to lose 100 jigs!

Mid river in Wyandotte is easier fishing. Try U.S steel from the purple building on down to the Cranes (west side of the river). Start in 14ft of water and move out to 40ft as the day progresses. Less snags. Across the river is the match stick, start just below the light house and drift back towards the pump house. Watch your GPS, and hug the Canadian line. More sand here and way less snags.

Launches include L.E.M.P (lake Erie Metro Park) south of Trenton at the mouth of the river (5 mile run up stream). Elizabeth park (1 mile up stream from Trenton) Wyandotte (about two miles downstream from U.S Steel) Delray, and Blanger park.

Be prepared to get there early or wait in line for about 2 hours to launch..... The guys that go with me... no waiting time. Advantages of being a private launch member!

    Hope that helps

Thankyou for a stunning report Rich, this will be super helpful indeed. My brother and i were planning on canal fishing for panfish but a nice little jaunt down that way might be just what is called for. We were looking at fishing the st clair river and the canals but were not getting too many reports on any of the fishing up that way.

Ok guys we are fishing in the wrong spots. This was a post on the MichiganSportsman.com Saginaw Bay site

"I caught my biggest crappies ever on willow leaf Jack hooks with white beads, the biggest was 18.5 inches. They came out of one of the marinas on Saginaw Bay! Mine were caught through the last ice. In fact, the ice was so thin you couldn't walk on it and we fished off the docks. After catching the 18.5 I lost a bigger one when it wouldn't fit in the hole the 18.5 incher came through! I know some people will think that is a fish tale but I swear on my parents graves"

Now has anyone ever seen one this size ?
We need to invite this fellow to Crappie Camp !

Only down south, but they are around. I've always thought if you can find the right combination of structure, etc. that the Great Lakes are just a bigger waterbody for growing some dandy slabs.
