I've got lowrance hds10 gen1 and hds7 touch both with structure scan, most of my friends have lowrance units so it makes it a bit easier to figure out how these units work or how to get them to work better. I'm liking the hds touch so much I'm thinking of upgrading my hds10 to a touch unit. Best thing to do is go over to cabelas and play around with each unit and see which brand, unit , features you like
get in, sit down, shut up and fish

Check out a couple shows this winter and play with the different models. I grew up with Lowrance, so thats what I use. On our pro staff we have both Lowrance and Hummingbird pros and from what I've heard, you cant go wrong with either. It more a matter of personal preference.

Kinda my train of thought as well. I got till spring, so I'm not rushing. I've got to much time on my hands and like to wander the Internet over thinking fishing equipment.

[QUOTE=Alboy79;2832728]Is Humminbird vs Lowrance a Ford vs Chevy debate?

i want to put new electronics on my boat for spring, and have been reading about both brands. I read a lot of people talking up their Humminbird units on one thread, then discussing all the issues in another. I hear the talking up, but don't hear as many issue stories, with the Lowrance.
When I look at online retailers like BassProShop or Cabelas, the Humminbirds seem to have noticeably lower customer ratings.

Does one have "Must Have" qualities the other doesn't?

I want a console unit and a front mounted unit.

What say ye? Ford or Chevy?[/QUOT I have a 898 'bird..I like it..if the CFO would allow new, I would look very closely at Garmin's new stuff..mighty impressive..covered my rig today, done till 2015 YMMV 5

I gave in... I winterized the boat today. Then I made a list of my off season upgrades.
When I came in and got on Here, I had a pm concerning some of my upgrades.

    So it starts.

Sorry, been a couple of days. My tablet met an unfortunate fate. Abby dropped it down the stairs! The new one is 4g only and.... of course I don't get 4g at my house. I get 3g only and that is because I have an extender antenna installed at the house. So, the 4g goes back and I keep looking. Typing on my phone doesn't work well. I have a computer but, because I do it for a living, I don't play with it much.

So, I've been looking for about a year now. I was in no hurry but I wanted a bigger boat with a full windshield (similar to Kevin's boat). I already had a buyer for my boat that was chomping at the bit. I am partial to Alumacraft so I was looking at the new 2015's. I got the pricing just so that I could compare. I'm always under the impression that it is better to buy a leftover model year from a dealer than to go new (huge savings). I narrowed it down to two identical boats (Alumacraft Dominator, and Competitor). The difference in the boat is the interior makup. The competitor had way more storage but the dominator had wider gunnels. I decided on the Competitor and began my search for a leftoever 2013. If one couldn't be found, I would step up to a 14.

I ended up finding a leftover 2013 Alumacraft 175 competitor Sport at Cabelas in Grandville. I ordered a custom cover and will bring it home as soon as the cover comes in (and they install my air ride seats!)
After that, I start over as I sold everything with my other boat. I simply needed a bigger deaper boat to do some of the fishing I enjoy. I shot myself in the foot on a few lakes I fish however, 1, my old boat gets stored in my barn! and 2. I also own a 12 foot aluminum I rebuilt a couple years ago.

    Sounds awesome!

Let me know when you come pick it up, maybe we can grab lunch or dinner. I'm not to far from there, and I know some others are close as well.
Maybe we all can have an impromptu Crappie.com Michigan chapter "meeting"
