Sounds like its starving for fuel. Could be a clogged main jet or sticking inlet needle in the carb. Could also be a bad/weak fuel pump. Then again could also be an ignition issue related to advancing the throttle. If possible, you need to check the compression and for good spark prior to doing anything.

Put a clear fuel filter on the fuel line between the fuel pump and carb. It will give you something to watch while it runs and if it dies and the filter is mostly full you know the fuel pump is good and the problem lies within the carb. Otherwise the pump is bad and you can verify by pumping the bulb by hand as you accelerate to see if that solves the problem.

For the carb, get a kit. I also like to soak mine in some stuff called "Chem Dip" after I clean it a little. They sell it at almost all auto parts stores.
