    Question Throttle Problem?

I got a 1986 mercury 25 hp outboard motor. I was using it the other day and it started acting weird. I would twist the handle to go and it would go just fine. But when i went to floor it it would shift into neutral. If i got to a certain point in turning the handle it would go into neutral. But if i just slowly excelled and didn't twist the handle all the way it wouldn't go into neutral. Have any of you guys had that problem? Or know what the problem might be? I thought it might be something in the twist handle but i really don't know anything about motors. Im just trying to figure out how much money this is going to cost me to get fixed.

    Thanks

Kinda sounds like the shift cable has streched and over time the clutch dog has rounded off, I can't remember the adjustment for more throw into forward gear. It needs to go into forward farther than reverse because you never try to get on plane going backwards. I think that if you look where the cable comes out of the handle, there should be a trunion that it wraps around , look to see which way it moves going into forward then look for an adjustment to get a little more. If it has rounded off the clutch dog , forward gear , may not be much hope except to replace them, but I haven't seen much of this problem, most likely the cable.

Are you sure it was going into neutral or was the prop hub slipping? Lots of time with a slipping hub you can idle around just fine but when you hammer down on the gas the props just spins around the rubber hub and you don't get any forward push. You can tell if this is happening by using a magic marker and marking a line across the hub and prop barrel. Take it to the lake and replicate event and then see if the lines match up, if not the hub is spun. You can have a new one pressed in at a prop shop.

Thanks guys! I took it to the lake today after adjusting the throttle cable it runs better now at full throttle but eventually slips back into neutral. I don't think its a prop problem cause it moves the boat forward fine it just eventually slips back into neutral. I'm guessing I might just need new cables I'm going to take it to the mechanic later this week thanks again.
