As long as you have the muffs over the water intakes and there's no kinks in the hose and such, you can run it until you feel uncomfortable putting your hands on the cylinder heads. Harbor Freight also sells an infrared digital thermometer for $20 that is so accurate, you can see when the thermostat opens and closes. I've used mine many times to check my thermostats.
