I did not move the throttle during this time, water was smooth, motor did NOT change rpm's to my ears, motor had a steady hum to it.

Did a search and it might be my rectifier, but can someone tell me what I am looking(the rectifer) for on my 60 merc, where is it, what does it look like, etc. a picture would be helpful as well.
Item 17 I think. 60 (3 CYL.) Mercury Outboard 0T980000 & Up Electrical Components Diagram and Parts Don't know for sure without your serial number. Test your charging circuit by checking the voltage at the battery with the motor off and then again with it running. As RPMs increase you should see an increase in voltage.

thanks BB, will test the charging circuit, the volt meter was indicating about over 12 when going down the lake when I noticed the tach acting up. Had the charger on the batt, took it off the charger last night so will check it out, gotta find the muffs now. Is there a cheaper place to get the regulator than the link you provided, I saw where Scraper indicated he had found something at radio shack but was not sure if that would work for all brands or just his. I did check all the connections on the back of the tach and other guages, all seem good at this time.
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

That reference Scrapper made is for the older models that have just a rectifier. You have a regulator/rectifier which is a lot more expensive. Google the part number you need and you can find cheaper sources for it.
