Yesterday at the boat ramp a fisherman and seemingly a Forward Facing Sonar hater approached me with a question or two. Nice guy by the way.
His first question was the obvious one. Do you think you would’ve caught all those fish without forward facing sonar?
My reply, I don’t know as that depends on the day. He stated well it’s obvious to me that’s not a true statement as I only have a few fish and you obviously have close to a limit and much bigger fish.
I asked him how long had he fished the area? Answer most of his life!
I asked him what depths did he fish today, he stated he fished trolling along the banks fishing cypress knees and such as he always does.
I told him there was his problem today. They were few and far between at the three foot to five foot depths. All that I caught were in the twelve foot depth. I proceeded to tell him then I concentrated on those areas only. He said so you found that with your LiveScope. My answer, no sir I found where they were with my mapping and my side and down scan. In which I notice you have on your boat. He then stated yes but I would never ever have FFS.
I then told him, unless the fish seem not to be bitting I rarely look at the LS screen and once the fish depth was located a lot of times I turn mine completely off.
He stated well if it weren’t for social media very few would have those things. I told him I agree. But then I asked him why he hated the FFS so badly. His answer “it’s a waste of good hard earned money”! Then I brought to his attention I could say the same about your thirty five thousand dollar boat fishing rig. As I have a total of six thousand in mine which included FFS.
Then I asked do you mind me showing you something on your fish finding unit? Not at all he replied. I went and setup his fishing charts which he had not done. Then I proceeded to tell him how to catch good fish without FFS.
Then I showed him some photos I had taken with my FFS. He was amazed at all the fish. Then I stated to him, those were photos and locations fish were at and I didn’t get a bite. Will try them next time. I told him that’s what I use FFS for mainly marking spots.
He left with a totally different attitude than he walked up with. Now we are going fishing together in a few weeks. Point being kindness goes a long way.

Ignorance is bliss, and it's amazing how people's minds work once you find the crack to let information in. You seem to have good debating skills, and congrats on your ability to change this person's mind on how a person can use FFS as an advanced tool for finding structure and potential fish and not as a "cheater box," as some people think. I still catch more fish using pre-Livescope methods than I do when I stare at the screen to pick off fish or try to see what is working or not.
If I'm not at work or taking kids to their activities, you might find me on "The Rez" fishing. If not there, I could be in the garage working on my boat.J White LIKED above post
Good on you for having patience.
Not saying I would have argued or anything, I just get quick to say have a nice day and go on my way
If I had to give up one, the mapping I have now, or ALL sonar - I’d keep the mapping. Think I’d catch about as many, or at least plenty
