Austin, my Grandson , and I launched at 9:30 at Main St. and really didn't have great expectations since the last 4 or 5 trips to Da Bayou have been uneventful. The water was clear like Lipton Tea and falling slightly with a temp of 59F. Substantially cooler than last week. We hit a few spots with no results. Just a few tacos and plenty of bream. I had 4 keepers in the box and Austin was getting the red butt when I hooked a beast. It was a thick black that when we weighted it later in the trip was an even 2 lbs. As the sun started shining the bite picked up and before you know it we had a fish fry in the box. Or as I call my Ice Chest the Death Delight Club. (Shamma Lamma Ding Dong). We stopped at a grass bed which was 10 feet deep and no fish were visible on the screen but when Austin passed his jig over the hump something big came out the grass and hammered his jig. We both thought it was a catfish and were laughing until it surfaced and we realized he had the slab of all slabs on da bayou. He got it in the boat and we both were still in shock. After a quick pic he pulled out the judge, a Digital Scale, and his weighed 2 lb 4 oz. Austin said this is the size we were catching at The Bend In May. I had to agree. Mine was an even 2 lbs. That is a Personal Best for both of us on Da Bayou as far as weight wise. They must be gorging themselves getting ready for winter because these fish were very thick blacks. I knew I had lots to do at home like brine 2 turkeys, cook shrimp and meriliton dressing and corn bread dressing ECT. but the bite picked up and as you know one last cast ends up being another hour. We ended up with 25 nice sacalait and a few Personal Best, weight wise, slabs on Da Bayou.
The lesson today is don't under estimate where you are fishing. Da Bayou has been really hard for a month or two and we could have just stayed home. Instead we swung the bat and darn if we didn't hit a HOME RUN!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all reading this post!!
Bon Temps!!!
