The old 2003 johnson 175 that has operated flawlessly for years has a hole in the piston. Looking for a newer motor now & they are high.

Oh yeah. I can afford to buy one i just hate to take the money out of the checking account. I can't complain about the old 175 johnson at all it's 21 years old & every part on it except for the water pump is original. $5500 to do a complete rebuild. I've found a low hour used 4 stroke 150 & also a 2017 175 pro xs. My boat's rated for a 175 so i'm just trying to decide what i want to do.

That would have been my choice out of what you said your options were. My Mercury’s have done me well, and they’ve all had some years on them when I got them.

I wish you were closer I would buy your old engine in a heartbeat. I have one sitting on a stand in my shop right now.

I would go for a good used 175 and have a mechanic check it over if possible.
