The old 2003 johnson 175 that has operated flawlessly for years has a hole in the piston. Looking for a newer motor now & they are high.

Oh yeah. I can afford to buy one i just hate to take the money out of the checking account.I can't complain about the old 175 johnson at all it's 21 years old & every part on it except for the water pump is original. $5500 to do a complete rebuild. I've found a low hour used 4 stroke 150 & also a 2017 175 pro xs. My boat's rated for a 175 so i'm just trying to decide what i want to do.
I took care of the problem hopefully. I have a 2019 pro xs 150 merc 4 stroke being put on as we speak.
I've got a 2019 150 merc, really like it .it's real quiet an easy on gas.

That would have been my choice out of what you said your options were. My Mercury’s have done me well, and they’ve all had some years on them when I got them.

I wish you were closer I would buy your old engine in a heartbeat. I have one sitting on a stand in my shop right now.
them 4 strokes sure sip gas and run quiet , several boats i been in were "started" after they were already running ....![]()
sum kawl me tha outlaw ketchn whales
I would go for a good used 175 and have a mechanic check it over if possible.
Congrats Les!
