Caught a Few Good Ones Today

If I can ask a question, were the shiners fished using a float, tipped a jig, or free-lined with a split shot? I'm talking with a Writer yesterday about what I'm personally observing and He ask if I thought it was a larger or regional thing. Ross Barnett is 3 hours North of us, almost due North, you seem to be much further due North than us. Thanks

Yep Rojo, he's about 666 driving miles north of you, according to Google anyway. I'm about an hour Southwest if Bugman. Not sure about the shiners over there. But over here I end up using the Minnows, crappie minnows, as I have had just rotten luck with the shiners as a tipped jig or on a bare hook. I'm waiting to see what bugman says...

My buddy went old school with a minner hook split shot under a slip bobber i used jigs for the most part but did try removing my plastic hooked a minner under the bottom lip and hung it in front of a stakebed plum full of fish on a standard jighead i watched on ls and they would barely move i can't remember a day when they were so negative after a good while of this and 3 rain showers with a big one on the way we ended the day with 10 keepers i had 6 he had 4 and i think 2 or 3 of his came on plastics i never got a touch on the minners.....not blowing but we usually bring limits out of there pretty much yearound barring a flood or ice but this year the bite has been crazy tough for us and everyone else some of my friends that have fished there 40 plus years have given up but i'm gonna keep after em until i figure this thing out.

Nice fish fry in that box. Nothing like fresh Sacalait!!

Ive fished my entire life. Mostly salt water and in my opinion Sacalait slabs are the best eating fish.

On gut hooking fish with a hook, I started a while back, when fishing for bluegill, using a bare jig. I never gut hook them now. I use a 1/32 jig under a float with a crappie nibble. I would imaging a larger jig to set the float upright would work. My brother, when spider rigging, only uses those Tru Turn type cam hooks, and hardly ever gut hooks one and he fishes minnows only. It's going OK. Life in the way a lot. I need to find me a welder down here, then my 9' inflatable pontoon gets wet. Hopefully putting some slabs in the skillet. I'll be calling an order to you probably around 8/01. Just can't do much till then. Hope life is treating you all well, and you get them slabs figured out...

Hey Bugman, Thank you. Yep, I totally understand. OLE Joey up there standing on it totally. Seems the price on everything is through the roof, while the value of the dollar is underground in the sewer pipe. We, Ms. Joyce and I over here trying to get by on my disability checks and her Soc. Sec. check. to be honest, I just don't know any more. Keep hoping the Navy dept. will get to my two claims on mom and dad. that Camp Lejune water stuff. They were their the two yrs. before I was born, (1956-'58). Mom carried me for 8 of the nine months of the pregnancy there, then dad got transferred to San Diego. Doubt I'll get anything for me, but whatever mom eat or drank I got. Lost dad to cancer in 1982, and mom to cancer in '92. Me, I've beat cancer twice, thank the Lord. But, maybe I'll get something before I kick the bucket, just maybe.
Need to get some 1" square tubing bent then a couple pieces of flat stock welded to it, and I'll be back on the water. I'll e in touch around the first for some jigs, so I'll be ready any way. I go on the 23rd to the Dr again on my knee. Ms Joyce has cataract surgery next month, so I'm hoping to get my Left knee done the first or second week of Sept. So It will be Prolly Nov. to Dec. before the doctor releases me to fish. just have to see. But I'm going to be ready, for sure. Well, let me get off here. The pup thinks the biggins are eatin her insides up. I'll holler in a bit. Eric
