I usually staked the trap down so they couldn't roll it or flex it. Also, set it so they couldn't approach from rear of trap. Quit trapping possums when I learned they eat ticks.

Do a search on the internet, Possums not really tick eaters .

So I ordered some of the Wisper Quiet 22LR bullets and shot a possum right in the head with one. The bullet bounced off. I use 22 Shorts out of a bolt action and it's a kill shot every time.

Put a broom handle behind their head and stand on it. Pull up on tail till you break their neck .

I use a 22lr and a pillow as a silencer since I live in the city limits. It works like a charm.

No issues with noise here but I'm not up usually by the time the critters start coming in the yard.
