Happy New Year to all the members of this great site. Some of you have been following my goal to catch 1000 crappie in 2020. Well I didn't make it, but it wasn't for lack of trying. I was skunked several times in December, sometimes caught one fish. Other times my friends would catch one or two. I think it's good to set goals, even kind of silly ones, and I learned a lot, and am content with 986. I have the same goal again for 2021,and it includes a fish over 3#.I did very well yesterday in the cold wind, well, cold for here is much different than for some of you.

Very near 2000lb! Most of these fish have had incredible average size. I would guess 131/2" average, with over 25% bigger than that!

I personally ate exactly zero of these this year, all but 16 were released. My wife doesn't want to eat fish from this Lake due to the low level mercury warnings, so I released them. The ones I have eaten in the past have been excellent, but we usually have ocean fish, white, red, and green caught by me on charter boats, using some things learned from crappie fishing.

That weight is impressive! Were you targeting larger fish during the year?
I catch large numbers of crappie each year but most of them are not keepers. I'm thinking about following SK's example and targeting big crappie this year, only fishing stumps and laydowns instead of slips, bridge pillars, and brush piles.

Any day I'm fishing is a good day, regardless of what I catch.
I caught around 200 juvenile fish that I did not count towards my total, and yes the little ones are fun to catch, but I move on quickly if they are all coming up small. If I have an outing where the average is say 12",I finish out the trip, and go another direction the next outing.
