Wow, that is amazing.I will give you a contrast; I fished 6hours yesterday, water temperature is 51,caught exactly one! It was a really big crappie though, when I was fighting it, I was thinking what have we here? Got my first look at it and saw the giant mouth, said to myself damn it's a green carp. Big question; does that lake,or river system have deep water near by, or is that depth what they have to deal with?

I think I can answer this question. Here in Texas the crappie follow the shad when it gets cold. Shallow water warms faster than deep water so the shad head up the creeks during winter. The crappie follow them and they will stack up on the deep pools. For many folks winter is the best time to catch crappie. If you have a small boat or kayaker you can really hammer them.

The crappie follow them and they will stack up on the deep pools. For many folks winter is the best time to catch crappie. If you have a small boat or kayaker you can really hammer them.

Okay, that makes some sense, but we have several wrenches that are thrown in here. the Lake is very low, and all the channels that I fish during the very early spring are one foot deep. The shad are so plentiful and spread out that it is inconceivable, the crappie are not piling up in places where they had in previous years, and all species are so stuffed with bait that even the live bait bass guys are having zeros.

keep in mind crappie eat 24 7 365 , they about never stop eating . there is a magic silver bullet to kill that there were wolf my friend .
Not fishing there makes it difficult to diagnose , but to be sure when or if you do you should be able to hammer down in the cold water .

This is fact , there are a bunch of variables though . Most lakes with larger and or longer tributaries here have a river or creek run in the winter . But not all of them in substantial numbers for reasons i am not sure about . The other variable is the depth of water some of the fish stay in when they run the creek or river . The deeper holes in that spot are not typically the best locations for some odd reason .
the deep holes will have a lot of fish in them , but not a lot of crappie .
