Label side up doesn't work for all reels. It depends upon which way the bail turns. The line should come off the spool in the same direction as the bail is turning. That will minimize your problem. However as has been said, cold weather and mono don't mix well. You might want to consider a braid.

This is true. I had one case for whatever reason with Stren Crappie where I had to flip the spool label down to get the line coming off in the same direction as the bail turn. Normally label up always works. The reel was the same as before so it was the way the line was spooled at the factory(?) You have to check, and not filling up the whole reel spool is important as well.
