I agree with AlphaHawk...I have several custom made spinning rigs using micro guides and if anything they help casting distance. However, if you are using a larger reel the larger spool will throw a larger "loop" and it will struggle to get through that first guide.

Toby .... I've had several different reels on my ESP, and currently using a Okuma Stratus STX20 .... and it balances pretty well on my rod. But, yeah ... it might be good to know what size (brand/model) reel he's using.

Another thing that may be giving Bert a "twist" problem is using a UL reel .... and/or .... very light baits. Or it could be something as simple as "wrist snap" casting, which can cause baits to spin in the air on their way to the water. I've even had the bait to end up going between the line and blank between the tip and last guide when wrist snap casting a lot. And I've definitely seen jigs spin on their way thru the air many times when casting that way. Nowadays I tend to make a more "controlled" casting motion, and have seen much less in the way of spinning jigs.
